A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens
Honestly, I am debating using this one still. It might seem a bit scary. But the 12yo handled the Sherlock Holmes short stories okay, so I think I will still go forward with it. I am torn about whether to use it in Oct or Dec. It isn't really a Christmas book as much as the title says and the movies all make it seem. However, that might be a good report on it: what makes it feel more like a ghost story book rather than a holiday book. That is pretty much the only reason I want to keep it, is because I think that question will be interesting to be answered by a 12yo.
